Scientists have documented the spectacular moment a group of humpback whales leapt out of the water near New York. Footage shared by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) shows the group of whales emerging from the water 25 miles south of Long Island. Researchers also witnessed fin whales lunging through schools of fish, minke whales feeding just below the surface, and dolphins riding their boat's bow waves. Scientists said that the New York Bight, one of the busiest marine ecosystems in North America, is becoming a popular habitat for whales and other marine animals. “Days like this remind us just how extraordinary -and important - the New York Bight is and has become,” said Dr. Howard Rosenbaum, Executive Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Bight programme.
