Belfast riots latest: Stabbing victim expected to wake from coma in 48 hours
Police used water cannons on rioters in Northern Ireland after a second night of violence triggered by the Belfast knife attack. Balaclava-clad demonstrators tore bricks from homes, ripped up driveways and used sledgehammers to crack paving stones for projectiles to pelt officers with in Co Antrim. Roaming mobs could also be seen taking wheelie bins from outside homes and lighting fires in them. Public transport was suspended and some schools closed early yesterday amid fears of further disorder. Earlier, Hadi Alodid, 30, appeared in court charged with attempted murder over Monday’s knife attack in which the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, lost an eye. Mr Ogilvie, who is aged in his 40s, is in a stable condition in hospital in Belfast, his family said. It is understood he is in an induced coma. Mr Ogilvie’s relatives said the violent disorder ‘is not supported by our family’. They added in a statement: ‘We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility – do not do this in the name of our loved one as we do not share the same values.’ Live Feed Sort: Newest first Oldest first June 11, 2026 8:24 am Aerial view of last night’s violence Sam Corbishley Expand June 11, 2026 8:19 am 12 police officers injured in violence Sam Corbishley Police regroup as they block the road from protesters leading to a hotel previously believed to house migrants in Glengormley, north of Belfast (Picture: AFP via Getty) Twelve police officers were injured and 16 arrests were made in the second night of unrest in Northern Ireland following the Belfast knife attack, Hilary Benn has said. The Northern Ireland Secretary said he was ‘glad to say that last night there was less disorder than we witnessed on Tuesday night’, as he condemned the ‘racist thuggery’ (below) seen in the wake of Monday’s stabbing assault which left the victim in hospital. That is racist thuggery, there’s no question about it at all.’Mr Benn also said ethnic minority people in the region were concerned whether they would be targeted next, adding: ‘We’ve had reports of people being stopped in their cars to be asked what their nationality is on their way to work, and this is completely unacceptable.’ June 11, 2026 8:08 am Rioters blasted with water cannons Sam Corbishley Coloured smoke billows as demonstrators gather in front of riot police vehicles (Picture: Reuters) Fires burn around police vehicles as protesters stand off with police in Glengormley, north of Belfast (Picture: AFP via Getty) Police aim a water cannon at demonstrators as riots continue in Ballymena (Picture: Reuters) Fireworks thrown at riot police (Picture: AFP via Getty) June 11, 2026 7:58 am Northern Ireland secretary says fast-track asylum scheme suspect used to enter UK no longer in operation Sam Corbishley The fast-track asylum scheme under which the suspect in the Belfast knife attack was reportedly granted asylum in the UK is no longer in operation, the Northern Ireland Secretary has said.Hadi Alodid, as a Sudanese national, was able to stay in Britain in 2023 after filling in a questionnaire rather than facing the standard interview, the Daily Mail reported. Court sketch of Sudanese national Hadi Alodid, 30 appearing via videolink at Belfast Magistrates Court (Picture: Elizabeth Cook/PA) Hilary Benn told Times Radio: ‘That was a process that was put in place by the last government.’Asked whether it still exists now, he said: ‘Well it does not, because that fast-track process doesn’t operate, because the last government lost control of immigration.‘As you know, net migration is down 82% now, compared to the peak reached under the last government as a result of a number of steps that we have taken.‘And because we now have dealt with the asylum backlog, we’re processing the cases quicker.’Mr Benn added that asylum seekers are now ‘properly processed’ in order for a decision to be made on whether they should be granted asylum. June 11, 2026 7:53 am Met Police ‘paying close attention to unrest‘ Sam Corbishley The head of Britain’s biggest police force has said the Metropolitan Police are paying close attention to unrest in Northern Ireland and ‘will be able to deal with anything that does happen’.Asked on GB News whether he was concerned that violence and disorder following a stabbing in Northern Ireland could be more widespread, Sir Mark Rowley said: ‘So I really feel for colleagues in Police Service in Northern Ireland, they’re really dealing with some very challenging situations on the street. Of course, there’s been a couple of very contentious incidents.‘There’s public debate about those, but we see some of the extreme rhetoric that tends to sort of be more and more common in public debate now, driving some of this activity. We saw it, didn’t we, with Southport, where extreme rhetoric and online commentary led to disorder.‘So we’re paying close attention to it. We’ll be able to deal with anything that does happen.’ June 10, 2026 11:05 pm This blog is ending for this evening and will be picked up again in the morning – Recap Barney Davis Police used water cannons in Newtownabbey after protesters threw bricks and other objects, with fires set and infrastructure damaged.Rioters in masks dismantled property, made projectiles, and clashed with police near Sandyknowes roundabout; unrest also spread to Derry.Violence followed a recent knife attack in Belfast, with the victim left seriously injured and the suspect charged with attempted murder.Previous unrest included arson attacks and racially targeted violence, prompting transport disruption and school closures.Authorities condemned the disorder, increased police presence, made arrests, warned of further legal consequences, and urged calm. They add that they had been left ‘feeling disgusted’ by the recent disorder.‘We are completely devastated by the horrific attack on our loved one on Kinnaird Avenue. This has been a massive shock to our whole family, and right now, our only priority is being at his bedside and helping him recover.‘We have witnessed a lot of false information circulating on social media which is now forcing us to clarify that our loved one is in fact in a stable condition, and we are solely focused on his recovery at this time.‘We are also appealing to the media and the public to please give us some space. We need privacy to focus on our family right now, without cameras or people speculating about what happened via social media.‘We have been left feeling disgusted by the scenes that unfolded yesterday across Northern Ireland in the wake of what happened. We want to make it absolutely clear that to do this in response is not supported by our family, and peaceful protest is only ever the way forward. We have many migrants who make a deeply valuable contribution to our country, including from within our healthcare system and hospitality sector, and we depend on them to make our country work. We do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility – do not do this in the name of our loved one as we do not share the same values.‘We also wish to say a profound thank you to the local people who bravely stepped in during the attack. Your quick actions absolutely saved his life, and we will never forget what you did for him in that moment. We also want to thank the emergency services and the doctors and nurses looking after him.‘If you know anything at all about the attack, or saw anything strange near Kinnaird Avenue, please go to the police and stop sharing false information on social media, as it is deeply distressing.‘Thank you for respecting our privacy.’ June 10, 2026 10:37 pm Water cannons used to put out roadblock inferno Barney Davis June 10, 2026 10:19 pm Clashes in Newtownabbey on the second night of riots Barney Davis Police are continuing to come under attack in a second night of disorder in Belfast.A car has been set alight on the Antrim Road as night falls.
