PESA Act: 28 years on, still a long road ahead for tribal gram sabhas in country

The new BJP government in Odisha promises to extend the PESA Act, granting panchayat-like powers to gram sabhas in tribal areas. Despite the Act being nearly three decades old, most of the ten states with Schedule V areas have yet to fully implement it. The Centre is urging full implementation for greater tribal decision-making.
