Off-duty sheriff's deputy and companion step out of car on to freeway, die in early-morning crash
Off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Marcos Pena Jr., 31, was pronounced dead Tuesday morning after being killed in a fatal traffic collision on the northbound 101 Freeway in North Hollywood. California Highway Patrol investigators said he and a female companion were outside their vehicle.
