A long queue is building up on the M6 northbound near Preston after the motorway closed (Picture: National Highways) Drivers have been caught in a huge queue on the M6 in Lancashire after a police operation. Traffic has been stopped on the M6 northbound outside Preston after an incident, with drivers told to find alternative routes. A stretch of the motorway is closed between J28 (Leyland) and J30 (Bamber Bridge), and it is unclear when it will reopen. National Highways said: ‘Due to the nature of the incident, there is currently no estimated reopening time.’ A map shows where the M6 is closed, and highway authorities are unable to say yet when it will reopen to traffic (Picture: Google Maps) Motorists were told to ‘expect delays.’ Lancashire Police said: ‘We would encourage motorists to find alternative travel routes if they can do so. ‘We know that this closure will cause some disruption but it is absolutely necessary, and we are working as quickly as we can to get the carriageway fully re-open. We will update you as soon as it is re-open.’ Meanwhile, another section of the M6, further south near Warrington, is also shut due to a serious crash. This closure is in place northbound between J21 and J21A in Cheshire, and drivers should avoid the area, the police said. National Highways said: ‘Cheshire Police are leading the response and are carrying out investigations on the M6 northbound between J21 and J21A near Warrington, requiring a full closure of the carriageway. ‘Cheshire Police notified National Highways at 02:52am requesting assistance with implementing full closures to create a safe working environment at the scene. ‘Our Traffic Officers have been establishing and maintaining the closure points throughout the night, and we have also been managing the controlled turning of traffic caught within the closure. ‘As we approach the morning period, the closure remains in place with no expected end time currently available. If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.’ Got a story? Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk.
