Les Républicains claim symbolic victories over the left in municipal elections, but struggle in France's largest cities

Failing to win Paris, Lyon or Nantes, the party swung left-wing strongholds such as Brest, Clermont-Ferrand and Besançon to the right. All three cities had outgoing mayors allied with La France Insoumise (LFI, radical left), in what Bruno Retailleau condemned as 'shameful alliances.'
