Global Wetherspoon dupes – cheap booze, patterned carpets and all-day breakfasts

There's nothing more quintessentially British than a Wetherspoon pub. The patterned carpets, the cheap pints, the full English breakfasts - the chain's boozers have it all. And the company has now gone global, after it opened its first watering hole in continental Europe, with plans for more to open overseas. The Castell de Santa Barbera in Alicante Airport, used by British holidaymakers returning from Benidorm, opened its doors on Monday. Punters flocked to the drinking den, saying it felt like "home". And there's clearly an appetite for it, as shown by the dupe Wetherspoon pubs in place elsewhere. These cheekily-named taverns, named with a play on words, offer cheap pints and grub to British holidaymakers. They include Witherspoons in Pattaya, Thailand, where a pint reportedly costs just £2.13, while a breakfast - consisting of two eggs, bacon, a sausage, toast, tomato and baked beans - can be bought for £2.78. It also has patterned carpets, pool tables, dartboards and plenty of TV screens to watch sports on. Meanwhile, a pub on the Costa del Sol in Spain also appears to be cashing in on tourists' love for a slice of home. The Benalmadena venue, originally named Wetherspains, also offers cut-price alcohol and classic British dishes including sausage and mash, deep-filled pies, as well as gammon, chips and peas.
