First phase of the Census with Houselisting operations to begin from April 1, 2026

India is gearing up for the 2026 Census. The initial phase, focusing on houselisting, starts on April 1, 2026. Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General of India, has informed state officials. The Census will gather data on housing conditions and household assets. A later phase in February 2027 will enumerate the population. Caste enumeration will also be conducted.
