Alan Shearer slams Chelsea board over 'baffling' transfer decision

Premier League legend Alan Shearer (Picture: Getty) Premier League legend Alan Shearer has slammed the Chelsea board over a ‘baffling’ transfer decision. Chelsea have spent well over £1billion on signings since Todd Boehly’s BlueCo purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022. Chelsea spent close to £300m last summer alone, bringing the likes of Joao Pedro, Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens to Stamford Bridge. Despite the incredible spending there remains a number of glaring weaknesses in a Chelsea team that have slipped to sixth in the Premier League under new boss Liam Rosenior and exited the Champions League. Rosenior has swapped between goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, with neither suggesting they are at the level to be Chelsea’s long-term No. 1. Centre-back has also been a problem position for the Blues and Shearer says it is ‘baffling’ that those two areas have still not been addressed by Chelsea’s big-spending owners. ‘Chelsea are still searching for a top-class goalkeeper and a top-class centre-half,’ the England legend said on Premier League Productions. Chelsea owner Todd Boehly (Picture: Getty) ‘It’s baffling, really, when you spend that amount of money, that you still haven’t got that. ‘And they’re being punished for it, the keeper makes a mistake or two, the centre-halves are too easy to play through. ‘Newcastle scored a similar goal to the one Everton scored last weekend when they went straight through the middle of Chelsea. Struggling Chelsea No. 1 Robert Sanchez (Picture: Getty) ‘Chelsea are not going to achieve what they want while they’re still searching for that.’ A number of Chelsea’s sales have also been questioned, with the likes of England duo Lewis Hall and Marc Guehi sealing moves away from Stamford Bridge in recent years. Ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton has even questioned Chelsea’s decision to sell Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall given his recent form for Everton. Chelsea sold Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Everton (Picture: Getty) Chelsea spend £30m to sign Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City in 2024 but the midfielder only made 13 league appearances before being sold to Everton for £28m last summer. The 27-year-old has impressed under David Moyes at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, scoring six goals and providing three assists in the Premier League. ‘Look at Dewsbury-Hall at Everton, I wonder what Chelsea fans make of that,’ Sutton said on the BBC’s Monday Night Club. ‘I know Cole Palmer is there but I wonder what they’re thinking when they see his form and his ability in the final third to pick a pass.’ Chelsea enjoyed a promising start under Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat in January, but lost four games in a row before the international break. Rosenior’s side suffered an embarrassing 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG in the Champions League either side of Premier League defeats to Newcastle and Everton. Chelsea return to action next weekend with a favourable FA Cup quarter-final tie against Port Vale, who sit bottom of League One. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
