A silent crisis in brewing in India. And it could hit millions by 2050

A study by IISER Bhopal warns that dams and reservoirs in India have lost nearly half their storage due to sedimentation, cutting power generation and flood protection capacity. Reviewing 300+ large reservoirs, it projects severe losses by 2050, especially in Himalayan and Indo-Gangetic regions. Experts urge urgent sediment management to prevent water insecurity, energy shortages, and ecological risks.
