Timmy the humpback whale rescue: Crowd cheers on stranded whale as mammal guided onto barge in rescue operation
Watch as a crowd cheers on a stranded humpback whale as the mammal is guided onto a water-filled barge designed to help transport him home. Timmy, named after Timmendorfer beach in Germany, is thought to have lost his way last month, after he was spotted in low-saline waters which whales usually avoid. Scientists say the mammal’s appearance in the unfamiliar location suggests he was disoriented or ill, and he has spent the last few weeks repeatedly running aground on sandbanks. On Tuesday (28 April), applause and shouts of joy were heard as the mammal was coaxed onto the floating tank with a barge that will be later pulled out to the North Sea, his natural habitat.
