Spence has fallen some way short of expectations at Tottenham after joining from Middlesbrough back in 2022, having helped Nottingham Forest win promotion during an outstanding loan spell at the City Ground. But after three separate loans with Rennes, Leeds and Genoa, Spence returned to north London last term and began playing with the kind of confidence and purpose that convinced Spurs to part with £20million four years ago. A strong end to the 2025/26 campaign earned Spence a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad and the versatile 25-year-old proved one of England’s breakout stars with a series of eye-catching performances in the knockout stages. However, according to The Sun, Spence is not necessarily a guaranteed starter at Tottenham heading into the new season, with Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson believed to be Roberto De Zerbi’s favoured full-backs. It’s claimed Tottenham are ‘open’ to the prospect of selling Spence and would be prepared to do business should they receive an offer in the region of £35m before the transfer deadline. The report states that Liverpool are among the clubs monitoring the situation as they scour the market for defensive reinforcements, ready to pounce should an opportunity present itself. Inter have already held discussions with Spence’s camp this summer having been alerted to the England international during his impressive half-a-season stint with Genoa two years ago. Spence signed a new contract with Spurs last August, tying him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until June 2028. But three weeks on and the Nerazzurri are yet to step up their pursuit, leaving Spence in a state of limbo with the new Premier League season fast coming into view on the horizon. As one of Tottenham’s many World Cup participants, Spence was not included in De Zerbi’s touring party to New Zealand and Australia for the club’s pre-season clashes against Auckland FC, Sydney FC and Chelsea. Spurs continue their busy pre-season schedule with a friendly against Getafe at their training ground on Saturday, before welcoming Hoffenheim to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium the following weekend.
