KYOTO — When madake bamboo pieces are heated by far-infrared rays, their green exterior instantly turns whitish. Bamboo oil then rises to the surface and is quickly wiped away with a cloth. This is part of a bamboo processing technique employed by Takashi Miki, 52, the fifth-generation owner of the Miki-Chikuzai-ten bamboo shop in Minami Ward, Kyoto.
