His actions only came to light when his wife found a forgotten scrapbook in their attic containing the children's names and photos. In February 1988, Sir Nicholas sat in the studio audience of That's Life!, believing he was just a member of the public. Dame Esther Rantzen then pulled out his scrapbook, revealing what he had done, before asking if anyone in the audience owed their life to him. This prompted dozens of adults seated all around him to stand up and applaud him.
